Speaker 1:

Hello, welcome back to another episode of Talk Mode. Today we're back in the land of book reviews and we're diving into a legal thriller that'll have you questioning everything you know about justice. We're talking about the Devil's Advocate by Steve Kavanagh. I hope I'm pronouncing that right Now. Before we get into the plot of the book, let's talk about the genre. The Devil's Advocate is a classic legal thriller with a bit of a twist. It's coming in at around 399 pages. First published in 2021, fans on goodreads give it a solid 4.39 out of five stars, but we'll get on to my rating at the end. The book is fast-paced and keeps you guessing until the very end. It throws some serious ethical dilemmas your way. We're talking about good versus evil, right versus wrong and the lengths that people will go to for what they believe in. I'm going to read you a little bit of the blurb and then give you my thoughts.

Speaker 1:

Ambitious district attorney Randall Korn lives to watch prisoners executed even if they are not guilty. An innocent man, andy Dubois, faces the death penalty for the murder of a young girl. Korn has already fixed things to make sure he wins a fast conviction. The one thing Korn didn't count on was Eddie Flynn, slick street. Smart and cunning. The former con artist turned New York lawyer has only seven days to save an innocent man from a corrupt system and find the real killer. In a week the judge will read the verdict, but will Eddie be alive to hear it?

Speaker 1:

Now, one thing I didn't realise when I picked this book up is that it's actually the sixth in the series. But, to be fair, I read it and it can be read in isolation on its own. So that's really cool the way the author's written this book. Apart from a few callbacks to previous things that have happened in the series, it can be read in isolation and you're not really missing anything. So that was really good. I picked this up from the Works. It was on one of their offers where they do three books for six quid, so it was a decent price.

Speaker 1:

So let's get into a little bit more about the story, obviously not getting into any spoilers. As you can see from the blurb, it's it's a legal thriller, which is a con artist who's become a lawyer, and what follows is a thrilling journey that eddie races against the clock to uncover the truth. He digs into alibis, exposes corruption and puts his own life on the line. Well, when? Is it ever simple in any of these legal thrillers? And it'd probably be boring if it was. But here's what I loved most about the devil's advocate. It made me think. It explores the idea of what it means to be innocent and the power of the justice system and the lengths people will go to for their own agendas. Obviously, like I said, can't give away any spoilers, but let me just say this the twists and turns in this book are somewhat mind-blowing. Just when you think you've figured it all out, the author throws you another curveball that leaves you saying wait, what?

Speaker 1:

Overall, the Devil's Advocate is a gripping legal thriller that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. It's well-written, with characters you can't help but root for, even the morally ambiguous ones, and a plot that'll leave you wanting more, which is great, because it's the sixth in the series, so you can go read the other five. For me, I'm going to give this a solid four on my scale. It's a good book. In fact, it's a great book and, to be fair, it's found a spot on my. I might need to change up this rating scale because number 5, 5 on my scale has got a permanent spot in my library. I don't know if it's got a permanent spot, but it's definitely got a spot at the moment. I'd really recommend you check this out. If you're into the legal thriller genre with a bit of courtroom drama and action, hit me up in the comments and let me know what legal thrillers have blown your mind. And until next time, keep on reading, take care. Goodbye.
